An MIT app is supposed to recognize corona sufferers by their cough. The Greens demand that the federal government promote such innovations.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is developing a smartphone app that can use the coughing sound to determine whether someone has Covid-19 or not. To this end, the German federal government is “not yet in direct contact with the authors or developers,” replied the Ministry of Health to a request from the Greens, as Spiegel reported.
Tech Taskforce vs. Corona
The Green politician Anna Christmann had made the request and is now calling for a technology task force to combat the corona pandemic to be set up. This should systematically look for innovative methods that could help against the corona pandemic.
“If an artificial intelligence can recognize a corona cough, it opens up completely new opportunities for test strategies,” Christmann told Spiegel. This could complement previous tests and enable milder restrictions in social life.
Promising hit rate
In initial tests, the MIT cough AI identified 94 percent of the participants suffering from corona with symptoms. In the case of the sick people without symptoms, the system was correct 100 percent of the time. In healthy test persons it was correct in 78.4 percent of the cases.
“The Federal Government is failing to push such innovations forward quickly”, criticizes Anna Christmann.
