⇡ # What’s new in Russia and in the world?
A little more than a month remains until the end of the ill-fated 2020 – you need to be patient a little, and next year will definitely be better. But this is not yet certain, because anything can happen before the end of the year. Just the other day, an asteroid passed dangerously close to Earth. It was recorded by the ATLAS system, according to which the celestial body had a diameter of five to ten meters. It passed at a distance of 370 km from the planet, which, for example, is less than the distance at which the ISS is located, and set a new record among the recorded asteroids.
It sounds scary against the background of other events in 2020 – only the fall of the asteroid was not enough for us yet. However, if it had entered the atmosphere, it would most likely have burned up in it before reaching the earth’s surface. For comparison: the previous recorded record for the closest passage of an asteroid to Earth was recorded in August this year, when the space object missed the Earth by 2,950 km.
The day when publications about the asteroid appeared was especially successful for Elon Musk – he was officially included in the three richest people in the world. Previously, the third position was occupied by Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg with a fortune of $ 103 billion. But thanks to the growth of Tesla shares, Musk’s capital grew by 10 billion in one day, and his total fortune according to Bloomberg was estimated at $ 120 billion.
Tesla’s value has been growing steadily since the beginning of 2020 (at the moment it has added more than 400%). And Elon Musk himself in March of this year had a fortune of $ 24.6 billion. Today he is second only to Bill Gates with his 128 billion and Jeff Bezos with a fortune of 183 billion.
ISS Air Leak will continue for several more seasons. Last time we received encouraging news, they say the crack is not so big, it was sealed with tape for the first time and it seems to work. But it turned out that no, it does not work – the air leak on the ISS has not been eliminated, the station continues to lose its atmosphere. Let us recall that this problem affects the Zvezda module, which is part of the Russian segment. The week before last, there was an attempt to seal the gap with a patch of rubber and aluminum foil, but it turned out that the problem persisted. To check the tightness, the problem compartment was closed on Wednesday and reopened on Thursday night – during this time, the pressure in it dropped from 736 to 685 millimeters of mercury. We will continue to monitor developments.
But why else you should follow more closely, it’s Apple and everything that happens around laptops on Apple M1 processors. Last week, the first reviews of these devices began to appear, as well as more and more tests, in which the superiority of the M1 over Intel is becoming more obvious. Apple’s move from x86 to ARM has been arguably the most significant development in the laptop market, so it’s no surprise that this topic is getting so much interest. Users, especially working professionals, are still afraid to buy a MacBook based on Apple Silicon due to the possible presence of incompatible programs. But the optimization process, apparently, will go even faster than Apple itself anticipated. However, we will soon publish our own reviews and tests of new devices, but for now let’s turn to the other side of the company’s activities.
Remember how Epic Games sued Apple for overly high App Store fees and Fortnite removal? We have repeatedly touched upon this topic in the digest, but there is still quite a lot of time left before the start of the trial – the first session will take place only in May next year. Nevertheless, Apple came up with an initiative that can be perceived as a step towards developers – the company has promised to halve the commission for developers with a turnover of up to $ 1 million per year.
The program, called the App Store Small Business, will start operating on January 1, 2021, and preferential terms will be provided based on the financial indicators of companies for 2020, and the total revenues from all applications of one developer will be taken into account. Newcomers to the App Store will also be able to take advantage of the reduced commission. If revenues exceed a million dollars during the year, the company will be transferred to the standard App Store terms with a 30 percent commission. And apparently, 30 percent will be counted from the amount exceeding one million, in order to avoid a large gap between those whose turnover is, for example, 990 thousand dollars and 1 million 100 dollars.
Epic Games’ reaction was not long in coming – CEO Tim Sweeney believes that Apple made concessions to maintain its dominant position and avoid punishment for high commissions. Other participants in the process, in particular Spotify, reacted next, in the statement of which Apple’s policy was called “arbitrary and capricious.” In any case, the court is unlikely to take this step into account as a mitigating circumstance if Apple is proven guilty. Interestingly, such a seemingly broad gesture has little or no effect on companies’ profits. According to Sensor Tower, as many as 98% of App Store developers will be able to take advantage of the new conditions, which bring … only about 5% of Apple’s revenues. The rest of the major publishers bringing in the remaining 95% will not be able to participate in the program.
That’s not all that Apple noted last week. Good news for those who believe that this company should be punished in every possible way and forced to pay – it will pay another $ 113 million to artificially slow down old iPhones. However, the lawsuit was a collective one, and each participant will receive some symbolic amount for the inconvenience caused – something like $ 25 per person. But definitely good news is that Apple has not abandoned the idea of notifying users about the collection of personal data. This feature was originally supposed to debut in iOS 14, but a number of major developers (mainly Facebook) opposed this decision. Allegedly, such actions by Apple are anti-competitive and will negatively affect small businesses. Sounds pretty, but Facebook has long been a small business. In addition, Apple emphasizes that there is no question of prohibiting the collection of data and encourages to do this reasonably and with respect to the end user.
Well, since we are talking about innovations in the politics of large Internet corporations, we cannot fail to note the sad “innovation” from YouTube. Audio advertising will appear on this platform, namely, in those videos that people listen to more than they watch. And there will even be a condition for advertisers – so that, having closed their eyes, a person could imagine an advertising object. In addition, they will be prompted to serve targeted ads targeting music genres. So now is the time to buy a subscription or use an ad blocker.
For dessert – the rating of the most popular passwords in 2020. It was published after analyzing the data of 300 million users by the company NordPass, which provides a password storage service. Despite all the efforts to get people to choose more complex passwords containing numbers and special characters, the simplest combinations are the most popular. For example, the first place was taken by the combination “123456”, which was considered quite reliable by two and a half million users. Be sure to read the original publication, there is a table that indicates the time for cracking passwords. And in most cases it does not exceed a few seconds.
⇡ # What’s new in reviews on 3DNews?
Those who missed all our articles and reviews will have to catch up for a long time – the week has been busy. Better to start with game publications, namely, with a review of the horror game Visage, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, and the latest Gamesblender release. After that, you can proceed to reviews of gadgets: CORSAIR Virtuoso RGB Wireless headsets, Dahua EZ-IP EZ-HAC-T5B20P-A HDCVI cameras, ASUS Zenfone 7 Pro and Motorola Edge + smartphones, and, of course, PlayStation 5 consoles.
As for the “heavy iron”, there is also something interesting. For example, a review of AMD’s long-awaited new product – Radeon RX 6800 and Radeon RX 6800 XT video cards. As well as testing the ASRock B550 PG Velocita motherboard and reviewing the Intel NUC 9 Extreme, a platform for building a fast mini gaming PC. Well, at the end of the issue, as usual, the last five issues of the digest:
Everything you missed: the first ARM-based MacBooks and criminal liability for cryptocurrency owners. Everything you missed: Roscosmos space spending, $ 1 billion bitcoin confiscation, and the unexpected TikTok initiative. Everything you missed: NASA colonizes the Moon, AMD unveils new video cards, Cyberpunk 2077 is delayed, Beeline is losing subscribers.
