Google is updating its Chrome browser to version 87 and promises far-reaching improvements for the last update in 2020, which should make surfing the Internet even faster and more intuitive. A reduced CPU load should also result in lower energy consumption and significantly longer runtimes.
More than an hour more battery life
Google Chrome is supposed to become more efficient with the update to version 87, according to Google’s promise of up to five times less CPU usage and one hour longer battery life – based on internal manufacturer benchmarks.
This was realized through numerous improvements under the surface, which Google calls “under-the-hood improvements” and wants its browser to be improved on numerous other levels.
For the last update in 2020, Google promises: “Faster starting, faster charging, and much more battery life.” The company would like to have achieved the following improvements and optimizations with version 87:
Chrome now prioritizes your active tabs vs. everything that’s open—reducing CPU usage by up to 5x and extending battery life by up to 1.25 hours (based on our internal benchmarks).Chrome now starts up to 25 percent faster, loads pages up to 7 percent faster, and does all of this using less power and RAM than before.Chrome on Android now loads pages near instantaneously when you navigate backward and forward, making these common tasks super fast.
Actions directly from the search bar
With a new feature or action set, consisting of various actions that can be carried out directly via the search bar, Google would like to make the operation and configuration of Chrome even more intuitive.
With the new so-called “Chrome Actions”, options and settings can not only be found via the search bar, but also executed directly. For example, you can delete your browser history by entering “clear history” and start the integrated password manager with the “edit passwords” command.
In addition, tabs should now be even better organized, grouped, pinned, shared and searched. As usual, the developers have summarized further information in the official release notes for Google Chrome 87.
Chrome 87 is now being rolled out in waves and can already be downloaded as beta version v87.0.4280.66 directly below this message from the ComputerBase download archive.

Chrome 87 was also available for download for a short time in a version optimized for Macs with Apple Silicon, but has been withdrawn due to crashes. Those who visited the Chrome download page with a Mac could choose between “Mac with Intel chip” and “Mac with Apple chip”.
For those who had brief access to the download, there is a workaround in the support area to prevent the crashes. Google wants to soon offer a bugfixed version of Chrome 87 for macOS with Apple Silion.
