Sackboy: Big Adventure revives the mascot of Sony and demonstrates that the PS5 can continue to be the home of several adventures of the character who was born in the universe of Little Big Planet. Know our opinion of this game.
PlayStation presents several value propositions to accompany the launch of its new console, PS5. Demon’s Souls for the “heavy” guys, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales that entertains all age groups and Sackboy: A Big Adventure to be played with family and younger people. This does not mean that these experiences cannot be played by another type of audience, but it is clear that Sony wanted to fill its new game console that could please the largest number of people possible, and it is easy to deduce that this segmentation of market has been designed by Sony Interactive Entertainment executives. What makes sense, when buying a new console, one of the factors that weighs most is the games available, and the fact that PlayStation 5 can respond to the most varied genres and players makes the console more desirable.
Sackboy: Big Adventure is the most joyful game of Sony exclusives for this Christmas and as if it resurrects a character, who although not being one of the most nostalgic, we haven’t seen much attention in the last few years, since the release of Little Big Planet 3 in 2014. After the departure of creator Media Molecule from the Little Big Planet universe, there was some disinterest in knowing what to do with the franchise, not least because the 3rd numbered game, which was taken over by Sumo Digital, was not so well received by the public and critics. There was a certain fatigue in relation to the series.
6 years later, Sumo Digital has taken on the task of bringing Sackboy back into the limelight, and did so by creating a game different from what we were used to from Little Big Planet. Sackboy: A Big Adventure is a 3D platform game, reminding us of titles like Super Mario 3D World or Yoshi’s Crafted World in gameplay, but where you can recognize the inspiration of Little Big Planet in the universe. In Sackboy: A Big Adventure we control the adorable little doll in an adventure that takes us through different planets while trying to free the contemporaries of Sackboy who were kidnapped by Vex, the villain of this game that tries to create panic in Imagisphere and that has the voice of actor Richard E. Grant. The story of the game is, as you would expect, quite simplistic but it is enough to give us motivation to go through the game’s campaign.
And here’s one of the big differences in this game compared to the Little Big Planet games. In Sackboy: Big Adventure we have no creative modes, so the game is based only on the campaign, being more similar to games of the genre. I spent about ten hours in the game while trying to defeat the evil Vex, and I didn’t miss the “creation” aspect that made LBP stand out from the rest. This is because the campaign is fun, varied and adorable. But after the campaign, I wouldn’t mind having the opportunity to venture into new levels or even create mine and share them with everyone.
On each planet we have dozens of main levels, where each one is different, through the enemies presented, the topology of the level or even the music you hear. And speaking of the music, I liked most of the levels present in the story, but it is in the musical levels that the game really stands out. Without spoiling the experience, I can say that you will find very popular songs that give life to some of the levels in the game and that will certainly cheer you up.
Sackboy maintains, almost unchanged, his set of movements. In other words, he is still not the fastest character on the platforms, but he can still sketch different expressions while slapping his colleague next door. In addition, Sackboy is now able to roll with a click on the O button, recalling a certain blue Hedgehog, and can also, depending on the levels, use tools that are used with a click on R2, where you can feel one of the great news of DualSense, Adaptive Triggers. Sackboy: Big Adventure is one of the greatest examples of the PlayStation 5 controller features, not only through triggers, but also haptic feedback, and especially in my opinion, of the use it makes of the speakers integrated into the controller.
The game also takes advantage of the benefits of the new console, namely at the SSD level, making the loadings shortened to the minimum possible, either when entering a level, traveling between planets or resurrecting after bad weather. Positive, but it could be better, because the game design at certain times does not seem to want to take full advantage of this, as for example in the victory celebrations at the end of each level. Graphically the game is beautiful, all the materials present are well recreated. Looking at the “fluff” that comes out of Sackboy’s body, it can even give the impression that we are seeing real materials, not created by computer. The game runs at 4K / 60 FPS which gives you that smooth and perfect look that we want in a platform game.
If you want to play with more friends or family, currently you can only play locally. The game supports up to 4 players in local multiplayer at this time, and online mode is expected to reach the end of the year. Please note that there are, throughout the game map, several levels that can only be played with more than 1 player, but are optional, do not prevent the completion of the main campaign.
In addition to these multiplayer levels, you will also have Knitted Knight challenges if you want to extend your time as a game, making it possible to complete the game at 100% for at least 20 hours. And Sackboy: Big Adventure can always be a game that you turn to when you feel like a pleasant and calm evening. The game achieves this right in the assumptions of clothing that Sackboy has at his disposal.
2020 is a forgettable year for a variety of reasons. It is a year in which we need, more than ever, to be distracted by healthy and loving adventures. Sackboy: Big Adventure is a good suggestion for the whole family and players.
Sackboy: Big Adventure is the lifting that the character and universe of Little Big Planet needed. And it’s not just playing in 4K. This new adventure manages to play with the well-known Little Big Planet formula and gives it a new lease of life that may be enough to see Sackboy more regularly on PS5 than we did on PS4. At least, that’s what we want.
