Wikimedia Ukraine, a non-governmental organization, named the most popular articles in the Ukrainian-language section of Wikipedia in 2020. The list was headed by the article “Ukraine”, which received more than 850 thousand views per year, the top 25 also included three articles on the pandemic and the coronavirus.
Wikipedia is one of the most popular sites in Ukraine – today the section of Wikipedia in the Ukrainian language has more than 1 million 60 thousand articles. In second place was the article “Shevchenko Taras Hryhorovych” – more than 680 thousand views, in fifth place was the article “Coronavirus disease 2019 in Ukraine” – it was viewed almost 440 thousand times a year.
In general, the COVID-19 pandemic was the main event of the year, and this naturally affected the interests of Wikipedia readers. Three articles on the topic were included in the top 25 – in addition to the article on COVID-19 in Ukraine, it is also “Pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019” (ninth place, 346 thousand views) and “Virus” (thirteenth place, 315 thousand). Articles “Coronaviruses” and “Orthocoronavirinae” (a subfamily of coronaviruses to which SARS-CoV-2 belongs), as well as articles on plague and Spanish flu, received considerable attention.
“The introduction of quarantine and home schooling has led to a surge in the popularity of articles on topics from the school curriculum, as well as popular culture. In particular, in May, one of the most popular articles was “Squirrels”, “Mushrooms” and “Pronoun” – topics studied within the school curriculum. Since March, we have seen a surge of interest in the article “List of the 250 most rated IMDb films” – apparently, during the lockdown, Ukrainians chose which films to watch. Instead, the articles “War in Eastern Ukraine” and “Armed Forces of Ukraine” were read less – for the first time in several years they did not enter the top 50, “commented Mykola Kozlenko, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Wikimedia Ukraine and administrator of the Ukrainian section of Wikipedia.
Lina Kostenko became the most popular modern person – the article about her was viewed almost 225 thousand times. Also among contemporaries, readers of the Ukrainian Wikipedia were interested in Ukrainian politicians. Volodymyr Zelensky, Petro Poroshenko, Geo Leros, Andriy Palchevsky and Denis Shmygal were among the top 10 most popular articles about contemporaries. Queen Elizabeth II and Elon Musk became the most popular among foreign contemporaries.
