PWM display Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra at low brightness levels off scale
Last week was remembered by many for the announcement of the flagship series Samsung Galaxy S21. What is the power of new products? First of all, in performance, displays and cameras, which should allow you to take high-quality photos. We saw the development of screen technology only in the Galaxy S21 Ultra, which received a Dynamic AMOLED 2x display with a brightness of 1500 nits. The resolution here is QuadHD + and this is an adaptive matrix with adjustable hertzon in the range from 10 to 120 Hz.
Samsung is unambiguous in its findings that for those looking for the best screen on the market, the Galaxy S21 Ultra should be the choice, which offers a bright and very clear picture. And with the fact that this is one of the best AMOLED displays on the market, one could agree, but there is one problem that spoils the impression. And her name is PWM.
The OLED technology itself and its implementation presupposes the presence of PWM. This is what can be described as a flicker that is not visible to the human eye. One has only to reduce the brightness of the backlight, as the flicker frequency increases. This rule is confirmed by the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, which passed the PWM test. Significant backlight modulation (PWM) appears at a brightness of 25% and the device shows that the ripple coefficient exceeds 92%, and at 15% it even increases to 120%. And that’s a lot.
Galaxy S21 Ultra users will experience flickering when the display brightness is low. Rejection of this display behavior in some may manifest itself in headaches and watery eyes. True, these problems should appear after several hours of using a smartphone, which creates an increased burden on the eyes. Still, it is worth measuring the time spent at the smartphone in order to dose the load that it exerts on the body. Anyone with a sensitivity should check the Galaxy S21 Ultra’s display response before purchasing.
