The shortage of semiconductors caused by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic is starting to become harmful to a wide range of industries, prompting the President Biden to start an investigation on how to resolve this issue (which, we recall, is among the primary causes of the few stocks of PS5 currently available in stores around the world).
The US president is expected to sign an executive order today that will kick off a 100-day investigation into semiconductor manufacturing, so that alternative strategies can be formulated to redress the negative impact on the US economy.
This follows a collective appeal from companies such as Apple, Sony, AMD e Qualcomm, for the President to take note of the shortcomings and what they could mean for the economy in the short and long term.
“Semiconductors play a vital role in providing products and services that power our economy, contribute to American innovation, and improve our national security”, the various companies said in a letter to the President, sent last week. “Given the central role of semiconductors, strengthening the position of the United States in their research, design and manufacturing is a national priority.”

The shortage of components has led Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 in short supply on the shelves, as well as making it difficult to sell computers, GPUs, laptops and much more. Even the automotive industry – especially that related to electric vehicles – is in serious trouble.
In any case, the executive order will not be limited to semiconductors, as President Biden has decided to launch similar investigations also in the fields of defense, public health, biological preparation, communication and information technology, as well as transport and energy and food production.
