, Jakarta – PUBG Mobile has been banned in India since September 2, 2020, after India’s Ministry of Electronics and IT accused the game of “sending user data in an unauthorized manner” to servers outside the country.
The developer, Krafton, has been working to bring the game back to the country. At the 2021 Indian Gaming Conference, Sean Sohn, head of corporate development at Krafton, said the company cares deeply about the Indian market and they are “working hard” to bring games back.
As time goes by, the hopes of Indian gamers to play PUBG Mobile again seem to be getting thinner. This is because the Indian Ministry of Electronics does not want PUBG Mobile to return, denouncing the game as “addictive” and containing “violent nature”.
In an interview with Seoul Economic Daily, Byung-gyu Jang, chairman of Krafton, said he wanted to get the game back on as quickly as possible. Jang also hinted that PUBG Mobile was banned due to political issues in India.
With Krafton set for a public IPO later this year, the company has been working hard to bring the game back to the country. The news of the PUBG Mobile ban came as a big surprise for gamers in India.
PUBG Mobile was downloaded about 185 million times in India and accounts for 24 percent of total game downloads since its release. The popular battle royale game also features India’s thriving esports ecosystem, which automatically collapsed after ban.
India banned more than 100 “Chinese” applications due to border tensions between the two countries. PUBG Mobile has been developed in partnership by Chinese company Tencent Games and South Korean developer PUBG Studio (formerly PUBG Corp.). Tencent is a global game publisher.
After the ban, Krafton took swift steps to bring the game back. Just six days after the PUBG Mobile ban, the company announced that it was “no longer authorizing” the PUBG Mobile franchise to Tencent Games.
Two months later, the company announced PUBG Mobile India, a new game for South Asia. Krafton also pledged a USD 100 million investment into the country including a new office and the Esports League. But until now there has been no sign of when the game will return soon.
