With the last 2020 report on the state of video games in Italy, the representatives of IIDEA take a photograph that reveals many surprises and at the same time provides important confirmations on the trend of the sector.
Starting from the data collected by GSD, GameTrack e App Annie, the IIDEA observatory underlines how Italian consumers have spent 2.18 billion euros on video games in the year just ended, with a 21.9% increase compared to the 1.79 billion euros recorded in 2019. 82% of the money spent (or rather, “invested in interactive experiences”) by Italians in 2020 is linked to the sale of software, with the remainder involving the hardware market between consoles and accessories.
The sector that records the greatest growth in Italy continues to be that of mobile video games, with a total turnover of 701 million euros and a 33.5% increase compared to last year. The momentum of the Italian videogame market for iOS and Android systems contributes to the growth of the entire sector, with the confirmation of the increase in the number of video games (especially digital) and consoles: in this sense, the data of 518.856 console new generation sold in Italy in 2020 (although in the total calculation are also recorded the sales of Nintendo Switch together with those of PS5 and Xbox Series X / S).
In the 2020 report on the state of video games in Italy we also find the results of a survey organized by GameTrack e Ipsos which, based on the projections of the answers offered by the sample examined, sets the total number of local players at 16.7 million, down from the 17 million recorded in last year’s survey. The player base, however, remains substantially unchanged, as it continues to represent approximately 38% of Italians between the ages of 6 and 64, of which 9.4 million men e 7.3 million women.
Of the many data pitted by IIDEA it is then impossible not to mention the card that sets the game time spent on average per week by fans at 8.5 hours, with even substantial differences between the owners of the different platforms: if on PS4, in fact, the Average game time reaches 6.3 hours per week, on Switch it drops to 4.7 hours. Respondents also report having spent in 2020 4,2 ore games on the Xbox Series X / S family weekly e 3,3 ore your PlayStation 5.
