From the Bloomberg columns, the reporter Jason Schreier publishes a new report suggesting the cancellation of The Lord of the Rings MMORPG, Amazon’s triple A project set in the fantasy dimension of The Lord of the Rings.
Schreier’s article is full of anticipations and background on the events that led to this cancellation which, if confirmed, would represent yet another setback for the videogame division of the e-commerce giant, after the death of Crucible and the constant postponements of New World.
According to the Bloomberg reporter, the leaders of the Amazon Game Studios they would have found themselves in a position to definitively block the development of the multiplayer RPG on the Lord of the Rings due to the frictions that arose with Tencent after the acquisition of the holding company Leyou, engaged with its studies in the realization of the title. Leyou’s entry into Tencent in a $ 1.5 billion acquisition, according to Schreier, would have forced Amazon to enter into new negotiations with the Chinese giant which, however, would not have been successful.
An Amazon spokesperson confirmed to Bloomberg that “we were unable to guarantee the terms indicated to proceed with the development of this project”. Also from the team of developers inside Amazon who was working on The Lord of the Rings MMORPG, confirmation of Schreier’s advances came, specifying with a note that “We love the Lord of the Rings IP and are disappointed that we won’t be able to bring this game to fans”. The Seattle team developers will come moved to other internal Amazon projects.
