Bad news for fans of the Lord of the Rings saga. L‘MMORPG in development at Amazon Game Studios has been officially canceled.
To report the news was the well-known journalist Jason Schreier, on the pages of Bloomberg. The title announced in the course of 2019 was to be one of the spearheads of the newborn Amazon Game Studios, the gaming division of Amazon.
It is about a serious economic damage to Jeff Bezos’ company which invested $ 250 million just to get the rights to the Lord of the Rings brand. With these rights they should have made a television series (of which the production continues) and the MMORPG we are talking about in this article.
The start of development had been announced in mid-2019, with work done in collaboration with the Chinese company Leyou Technologies Holdings Ltd. Last November, Amazon also announced that the title would enter beta phase between the end of 2022 and the beginning of 2023, with a first prototype of the game that it should have been ready by the summer of this year.
Unfortunately just the Leyou company was the key and the reason for the cancellation of the project. In fact, the Chinese giant Tencent acquired the company last December, and following this acquisition the collaboration and development contract that linked her to the MMORPG of the Lord of the Rings could not be worked out. By effectively forcing Amazon Game Studios to shelve the project.
The official confirmation came directly from an Amazon spokesperson: “We have not been able to adjust the terms of the contract for this title at the moment. We love the Lord of the Rings IP, and are disheartened that we can’t bring this game to users“.
It is about another tile for Amazon Game Studios, whose growth process has not started in the best way. As far as we know, four projects had already been canceled in recent months, whose code names were respectively: “Nova“, “Intensity“, “Breakaway” e “Crucible“. Mentre l’MMO New World from the September beta does not seem to be doing very well, especially in view of a launch scheduled for the end of August 2021.
