I Beolab 28 are new wireless loudspeakers announced by Bang & Olufsen. As always, the Danish brand has placed great care in design. The Beolab 28 have slender lines and offer a certain versatility in the installation phase. The appearance is that of thin columns characterized by rounded lines. The speakers measure 25.3 (W) x 137 (H) x 25.3 (d) centimeters when placed on the floor; the base can rotate to allow wall mounting: in this case the measurements change slightly becoming 21.2 (W) x 140 (H) x 25.3 (D) centimeters. The weight is 18.6 kilograms.
The speakers are made at Struer’s Factory 5 in Denmark. The anodized aluminum body is available in two finishes: the natural silver tone is flanked by anthracite black and bronze, plus the ability to customize the look with a fabric cover (gray and gray mélange) or solid wood (light oak , natural oak, smoked oak and walnut).
The covers open when the speakers are turned on and follow the progress of the sound reproduction, indicating the “narrow” or “wide” operating mode (we talk about it in detail a few lines below). On the upper side there are touch keys to control all functions.
Inside we find a 2.54cm tweeter, three 7.62cm full range transducers (placed both frontally and on the sides) and a woofer (contained in the conical base) by 16.51 centimeters. They are piloting them Class D amplifiers divided as follows:
- 1 x 100 watts for the tweeter
- 3 x 100 watt per i full range
- 1 x 225 watts for the woofer
Bang & Olufsen claims a maximum sound pressure of 110 dB (at 1 meter for the pair) and a frequency response between 27 Hz and 23 kHz. The power supplied is considered adequate for environments measuring between 15 and 50 square meters. To optimize the sound, theActive Room Compensation, a function that modulates the bass response adapting it to the type of environment.
Technology Beam Width Control instead it manages the two ways in which the sound spreads: “narrow mode“directs it directly towards the listener, reducing reflections to a minimum to make the most of the so-called” sweet spot “, that is the optimal point for listening;”wide mode“instead expands the area to improve the experience when the listeners are multiple.
Connectivity includes Bluetooth 5.0, dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi, two 10/100 Ethernet ports, a combined analog and optical input on 3.5mm jack, a USB-C port (for future use) and a USB port -A (for service functions). The Beolab 28 are compatible with com AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect and integrate the functionality of Chromecast.
The module that provides connectivity has been developed with a computing capacity defined as “overabundant” and adequate to accommodate new updates in the future. In case of obsolescence, it can still be replaced with one more in step with the times, a solution that we have already seen on the Beosound Level.
