Let’s go back to dealing with first Communications Observatory of 2021 published at the end of last month byAGCOM and that he has not only dealt with the dissemination of social networks but also with the analysis of data traffic in mobile telephony.
According to this report, in December 2020 the SIMs that generated mobile data traffic amounted to 56.3 million, with a slight decrease compared to the same period of the previous year (when the SIMs that generated data traffic were equal to 56.8 million).
However, despite this slight decrease, the amount of data traffic generated has definitely increased, going from 4,251 petabytes to 6,440 petabytes (equal to an increase of over 50% on an annual basis).
Italians generate more and more mobile data traffic
And even more impressive is the growth if we consider the data for December 2016, when the data traffic generated was equal to 1,078 petabytes (practically in 4 years the data traffic generated has quintupled).
This impressive growth is also confirmed by a second graph published by AGCOM and which focuses on the monthly unitary data traffic, which in December 2020 was equal to 9.72 Giga, with a growth of 49.8% compared to the same period of the ‘previous year (when the unit monthly data traffic was equal to 6.49 Giga).
And also in this case, the variation compared to December 2016 is nothing short of impressive: the monthly data traffic, in fact, in just four years went from 1.87 Giga to 9.72 Giga, equal to an increase of 420.5 %.
Undoubtedly, the significant growth in mobile data traffic last year was partly determined by the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic and the consequent restrictions, which forced Italians to change their habits.
Finally, the AGCOM staff points out that the SIMs that generated data traffic in December 2020 represent 72.6% of those human overall.
