The chip crisis it is causing heavy repercussions to the automotive sector with several car manufacturers having to slow down the production of their cars or even stop it for some periods. A problem that is obviously also affecting the Stellantis Group and all its brands.
The automotive group announced a new production stop in Melfi which will start from today until next May 10th. During this period, approximately 7 thousand employees will be placed in layoffs. The Group, therefore, would not have a sufficient number of semiconductors to carry on the production of its models within this plant. A decrease in demand due to the current crisis in the sector also complicates the activities of the site.
The Fiat 500X, Jeep Renegade and Jeep Compass models are built inside the factory. It is not the first time that this production site has stopped in 2021. And the problem of the lack of chips could last a long time, bringing the production of cars to fits and starts. Obviously, we are not only talking about the Stellantis Group but also about most of the manufacturers. For example, at a European level, more and more car manufacturers are sounding alarms about the shortage of semiconductors that could affect the production of vehicles over the next few months.
The solution to the problem, in fact, does not seem around the corner. Indeed, Volkswagen recently said that the second quarter of 2021 could be worse than the first. Right at the home of the uncertainty over chip supply, the German automaker would fail to have a clear vision of production prospects for the entire year. There are also those, however, who have found a “creative” solution to be able to resume the construction of cars.
Peugeot, for example, to continue production of the current generation of its 308, has decided to offer customers models without the digital dashboard. In its place, a “traditional” analog solution.
