It has been possible to distribute spoken audio over the Internet for a long time. One of the methods to do that is through a podcast. A podcast is a type of digital radio station that you can subscribe to. As soon as a new episode appears online, anyone can listen to and / or watch it. Apple’s Podcasts app for iPhone and iPad lets you find and follow new podcasts, with a huge selection waiting for you.
There are a lot of podcasts on the internet and the offer is very diverse. There are podcasts that only appear on the internet. But there are also radio and TV programs that offer their episodes this way. In recent years podcasts on a variety of topics have become very popular, including technology. iCulture of course also has its own podcast. There are many different podcast apps in Apple’s App Store, which often offer some extra functions. You can even listen to podcasts on your Apple Watch. Still, many people choose to just use the default Podcasts app. Whether this is enough for you is a matter of needs. If you want to occasionally listen to an episode of a podcast, the Apple Podcasts app can be a great solution, but you will miss some useful functions, such as dynamically adjusting the playback speed and automatically shortening silences. Just give it a try and you’ll see if Apple’s Podcasts app meets your needs, or if you still want something more.
Finding new podcasts
If you want to start listening to podcasts, or just want to know what’s out there, you can click the tab Discover see which shows are listened to a lot. If you scroll down, you will also see the most popular podcasts for different categories. Tap a podcast to listen to it. Or tap Show all if you want to see which other podcasts can be found in that category.
You can subscribe to a podcast by pressing the plus sign in the top right corner. This is generally free, but since iOS 14.5 it is also possible for podcast makers to offer a paid subscription. That way they can offer exclusive content for the real fans of the show.
Listen to podcasts
The playback screen when listening to a podcast is very similar to that of the Music app. At the top you will find the album cover and below that you can scroll through the episode. Next to the play button you will find two buttons to fast forward or rewind. This is useful if something is discussed that you find less interesting or if you want to listen back to what exactly was said. At the bottom you determine the volume and you can set the playback speed. Some people like to speed up a podcast. You therefore need less time to listen to a full episode. With the AirPlay button you send the audio to your headphones or speaker and with the three dots you have all kinds of options for saving the episode. You can also add it here to the list of episodes you want to play next.
If you scroll down in this screen, you can also view the show notes of an episode. Many shows here provide a brief description of the topics discussed in this particular episode so you know what it is about. You will also find a button called here Sleep mode. Tap it and set a time to stop an episode after the specified minutes. This is useful if, for example, you want to listen in bed and want to prevent the podcasts from playing all night long. At the very bottom you will find the cup Chapters. Once the podcast creators have cut their show, you can tap one of the chapters to listen to it.
Manage podcasts with Podcasts app
The podcasts you subscribe to appear in the tab Listen now on Library. Bee Listen now you can quickly start a new episode of a podcast you have subscribed to. So if you want to quickly listen to a new episode, you’ve come to the right place. For a more comprehensive overview of all the episodes and podcasts you love to listen to, check out Library to be.
Library shows many similarities with the Music app. At the top you can choose Programma’s to view an overview of the programs you have subscribed to. At the cup Downloads you will only find the episodes that are stored offline on your device. You can also save episodes or put them in your library. The app keeps track of which episodes you have already listened to.
Podcasts app settings
By default, you are set to receive a notification as soon as a new episode of your favorite podcast is ready. Do you want to turn that off for a show? Then go to the podcast page of the program and press the circle with the three dots. Then choose Settings and switch Notifications by setting the slider to gray.
In the Settings app you will find various options to customize the Podcasts app. Most of the settings are related to listening and downloading new episodes. Go to Settings> Podcasts to adjust these options.
At the top under the cup Podcasts settings you will find these three options: Synchroniseer podcasts, Block downloads over mobile network on Continuous play. The first option ensures that the podcasts are synchronized across your devices. Do you only want to download the programs via Wi-Fi? Then you turn on the second switch. With the option Continuous play make sure that the next episode starts immediately after the previous one ends. You can then listen to it immediately, without having to tap the next episode.
Under the cup Downloaded episodes you determine how often and when new episodes are downloaded to your device. Bee Mobile downloads you indicate the maximum download size of a show. To save space you can adjust the switch Delete episodes so that the episode is deleted from your device as soon as you have listened to it.
Finally, there are options for while listening to an episode. During playback you will find buttons to fast forward or rewind. In the settings you determine for each button how many seconds you want to jump forward or back. You can choose between 10, 15, 30, 45 or 60 seconds. If you are using headphones, you can set the buttons on the headphones to take you to the next or previous episode or to fast forward or backward.
At the very bottom of the page you will find an explanation about the privacy in the Podcasts app. For example, you can have the listening ID reset by using the slider at Reset ID to green.
