During the AirTag teardown, iFixit technicians showed where to create a hole to attach AirTag in alternative ways not foreseen by Apple.
In the post related to the disassembly of the AirTag, iFixit showed in detail where you can make a hole and alternatively use the Apple tracker. In practice, using a 1/16 “drill it is sufficient to drill a hole being careful to be very precise and accurate in doing it near the space where there are no chips and other components:”We miraculously managed to avoid all chips, cards, and antennas, by only drilling through plastic and glue“.
According to iFixit, Apple did not want to propose any holes on AirTag both for an aesthetic fact, and to be able to sell a greater number of essential accessories to be able to connect the tracker to various objects. Obviously, we strongly advise you not to do this, both because you risk making your AirTag unusable, and because you invalidate the warranty.
Meanwhile, several users are complaining the impossibility of associating a single AirTag to multiple accounts that are in the same “Family”, for example to share the location of house keys or other common objects. We’ll see if Apple will change this setting in the future.
