A new Marvel-themed fighting game may be in development at NetherRealm, the author of Injustice and Mortal Kombat. This at least is what some fans believe, following a tweet from Ed Boon, creative director at NetherRealm Studios.
Ed Boon is known for his sibylline tweets, through which it announces news to come, but sometimes players tend to see teases where there are none. In this case, at the center of the dispute is a recent tweet from Boon in which the director points out that James Gunn was able to work for both DC and Marvel, in the field of cinema. “She’s impressed,” Boon says, then putting on a dubious emoji, which certainly doesn’t represent excitement or happiness.
Does this message have some hidden meaning? We have no idea, and fans actually don’t, but that didn’t stop him from speculating that Boon is working with his team on a Marvel game, which would then be a new fighting game. Boon would then find himself in the same situation as Gunn, as he would direct both a DC (Injustice) and a Marvel game (the one at the center of the rumor).
To raise the hopes of the fans there is also the fact that Geoff Keighley, creator and host of the Game Awards, he replied to the matter with an eye emoji, as you can see above. Of course we are only talking about speculation based on nothing. For now we have to consider this idea only as an interesting but not very credible hypothesis. NetherRealm is owned by Warner Bros., after all, which owns DC. It would be very strange to see the team working on a Marvel project. However, we would be happy to be proved wrong.
