A handful of days are missing from the expected debut of Resident Evil Village which, in addition to marking the arrival of the cult series by Capcom on the new generation consoles, is the direct sequel to the seventh chapter (at this link you can find our review of Resident Evil 7). Let’s talk about the title in RE Engine that made us take on the role of Ethan Winters, a man like many who found himself in a waking nightmare from which it seemed impossible to escape. Before exploring the village in Romania, the ancient Dimitrescu castle and the other thrilling settings within the new survival horror, it seemed only right to retrace the painful events that took place in Dulvey, Louisiana, which saw the man save his wife from certain death and escape the threat represented by the Baker family and little Eveline, the lethal biological weapon born from the filthy experiments of The Connections organization. The icing on the cake, we did not fail to include the background of Resident Evil Village (the preview of the Resident Evil Village estess demo is just a click away), linked to the cruel operation of Chris Redfield against the Winters, the family that few years ago he had saved.
The horrors of the Baker house
As we said earlier, Ethan Winters is not a police officer who escaped a nightmare, nor a tireless fighter who has been opposing bioterrorism for years. He is an ordinary man who has found himself facing the mysterious disappearance of his wife Mia and the collapse of all her certainties. The hope of hugging her again, however, was rekindled when he received a strange video, in which the woman – looking anything but healthy – begged him not to join her.
With his heart in his throat he started driving his muscle car but without warning the authorities or realizing what his destination was: a swampy area at the center of several cases of disappearance never resolved. Arriving on the spot, Winters found his wife’s driver’s license and ventured into a seemingly uninhabited house, the walls of which had witnessed heinous murders and gruesome horrors. After exploring the dismal basement of the mansion, he finally found and freed a Mine in a confused state, who after a few minutes of lucidity unleashed superhuman strength to try to kill him. Man could not help but fight it and eliminate it to save his life.
Surprised by the full Jack Baker, the landlord, Ethan was stunned and taken to the family dinner, where he made the acquaintance of disgusting and out of control individuals, by Marguerite – Jack’s wife – to her son Lucas and a strange old lady in a wheelchair. Having survived the revolting organ-based banquet, Winters escaped Jack’s clutches, only to meet Zoe, the last still lucid member of the Bakers, by telephone. Intending to escape with the girl from the house of horrors, he managed to get in touch with Sheriff David Anderson, who was brutally killed by the head of the family Jack a little later.
Believing to have eliminated the unstoppable tormentor forever, following a spectacular fight in the garage of the house, Ethan has resumed contact with Zoe to figure out how to escape but he was surprised again by his father: with brain tissue healing, Jack was still living, thanks to the pathogen that had infected him and the rest of the family. Confronted for the first time with the mysterious fungal creatures known as Molded, Ethan has torn Baker apart with a chainsaw, following yet another out-of-logic duel.
So he got in touch with Zoe and found out that he should have obtained a serum to allow her and Mia to get away from the swamp safely. Divided by a fence, Winters and his wife – who was still suffering from heavy amnesia – met for a short time but the woman was taken by Lucas Baker and dragged into the darkness.
More than ever intent on saving her, the victim has faced the unpredictable Marguerite Baker in the old house, twice. After eliminating his arachnid form, he collected the mummified arm of a child from the “D-Series”, in order to make it the basis for making the serum. Making his way through dozens of Molded creatures and Lucas Baker’s sadistic traps, he collected the serum’s second ingredient, the head of a “D-Series” fetus, to then deliver it together with the arm in Zoe’s hands. The young woman obtained two doses of the serum but when Ethan was about to administer it to both of them he was surprised by a horribly mutated Jack Baker into a hideous creature. To save himself and the two women, Winters injected a dose of the serum into the monstrous Jack who – having been completely consumed by the infection – was finally defeated.
The exploration of the wreck and the end of the nightmare
Unfortunately, however, he found himself having to make a painful choice and, in the canonical plot, he wanted to give his wife Mia the last dose and not Zoe, which instead was saved by the brave uncle Joe Baker (at this link you can find the review of the Resident Evil 7 End of Zoe DLC). The nightmare for the newly found spouses did not end and saw them face the truth aboard the remains of the Annabelle boat.
Mia – who was actually an agent of the criminal organization The Connections – remembered the days spent on the ship with her colleague Alan, during which she had to pretend to be the mother of Eveline, the powerful biological weapon in the guise of a child responsible for the tragedy of the Baker house. At one point in the journey, the little girl became unstable and began vomiting the fungal substance known as The Mold, which in a matter of minutes transformed the crew members into disgusting beings. The first creature of the “E-Series” then infected the Bakers with the fungal superorganism, making them part of his twisted family. Returning to Ethan, the man “met” with Jack Baker in a vision and discovered the truth about his family, only to obtain a sample of Necrotoxin-E, the only real weapon capable of eliminating Eveline.
Separated from Mia once again, Winters returned to the Baker house to join the old woman in a wheelchair – that is, the adult and “worn” form of little Eveline – and inject her with Necrotoxin. Unfortunately, however, the biological weapon was not defeated and on the contrary turned into an immense bituminous mass that engulfed the entire house. Tooth and nail, the protagonist fought for his life over the course of a few intense minutes but nothing seemed to quell the fury of “E-001”.
The definitive help came from the hands, or rather from the helicopters, of the Blue Umbrella, an anti-bioterrorism organization determined to oppose with all its might the legacy of its shadowy ancestor. Armed with a special Albert-01 pistol, Winters put Eveline to bed once and for all and was rescued by Chris Redfield and his team. Reunited with his wife, who clearly needed treatment and analysis, the protagonist finally found himself shaken and full of conflicting emotions: he wanted to build a new future with a My regret of what he had taken part in, but in his heart he knew that he did not it would have been easy.
The beginning of a new nightmare: the background of Resident Evil Village
Finally, we come to the background of Resident Evil Village, which in a certain sense act as a bridge between the two main chapters. Four years have passed since the tragic events of the Baker house, certainly not enough time to erase the nightmares, the moments of galloping anxiety and the traumas experienced by the Winters. At the same time, however, it is in these 4 years that Ethan and Mia have found their complicity, who have embarked hand in hand on a path to serenity.
Speaking of serenity, the birth of little Rosemary gave them a joy they hadn’t felt for a long time and that nothing seemed to be able to obscure. Unfortunately, as per tradition, these moments of peace are not destined to last in Resident Evil (would you like to retrace the plot of the series? Our special Resident Evil story is for you!). On a darker night than usual, Chris Redfield and his team broke into Ethan’s home and this time not to protect them from looming evil.
The ruthless killer on duty was in fact to be found in Redfield himself, who – after apologizing to Ethan – did not hesitate asparrying Mia several gunshots. As if that weren’t enough, she snatched little Rose from him, and then took him to the Eastern European village. Here the protagonist will have to force himself once again, for defeat the sect led by Mother Miranda and save her daughter.
