Unik is the right word to describe the position of the game “Sunset Overdrive” when we talk about Insomniac Games. The existence of a game that combines action and fast movement was born in 2014, when Insomniac itself had not ended up being bought by Sony and becoming the first-party studio it is today. Even more crazier, Sunset Overdrive itself was formulated to become one of Microsoft’s exclusive flagship games on the Xbox One, before finally finding its place on PC when it was released for Steam 4 years later. So, what will happen to this franchise next?
Given that Sunset Overdrive is an IP owned by Insomniac, the transfer of the studio’s status as Sony’s first party studio means making the title of this game officially owned by Playstation. Based on information from renowned Twitter gaming persona – Nibel, Sony recently registered the trademark for Sunset Overdrive with the US-related agency recently. Although this trademark registration does not always lead to the release of the latest series and the like, at least it confirms the ownership status of this IP under Sony.

The registration of the name Sunset Overdrive by Sony also has an interesting timing with the return of its director – Drew Murray from Microsoft recently to Insomniac Games. Did Sony really plan something with him? Or is this just a standard step to secure their IP? We’ll just wait.
