Game news Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order, KOTOR, Mandalorian … what does the future hold for the franchise?
On the occasion of May 4, day of celebration of the Star Wars saga, we invite you to take stock of all the projects currently underway within the franchise. Whether it’s games, movies or series … a quick overview of what the Star Wars galaxy has in store for the future.
For Star Wars fans, May 4th is a special day. In English, this date is pronounced “May the Fourth“, which recalls the famous phrase of the saga”May the Force be with you“, (” May the Force be with you “in French). Because of this resemblance, fans have made this day a moment to celebrate the Star Wars saga. So this is a good occasion for us others, players, to take stock of the many Star Wars game announcements that have multiplied in recent times, as well as the films and series in preparation.
Years that promise to be rich in Star Wars games
Among all the projects in progress, the PS5 / Xbox Series version of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is the most imminent since it is scheduled for this summer. As a reminder, an update had already been deployed to take advantage of the power of these new generation consoles. This time, it will be a real full port specific to these media. Rest assured, owners of the game on PS4 and Xbox One, this upgrade will be free for them. In addition, with 10 million copies already sold, it is very likely that the title will know a sequel in the future, especially as EA has already announced that it is the “first title of a whole new franchise “. Moreover, since we are talking about Electronic Arts, we can evoke the many rumors around a Star Wars: Battlefront III, which remain unfounded for the moment.
As for the 2021 releases, players will also be able to try their hand at Star Wars Hunters. Scheduled for iOS, Android but also Switch, it is a third-person free-to-play game that sees two squads compete in an arena. Taking place between episodes VI and VII, the Zynga studio promises that it will be possible to select a hero from a range of various characters (bounty hunters, rebels, stormtroopers …). Until very recently, a third Star Wars game was also planned this year. Unfortunately, last month TT Games has announced that Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga will not be released in Spring 2021, with the game being postponed a second time indefinitely. Conversely, Part 2 of the Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge VR experience is still scheduled for release this year.
Regarding the projects formalized but which we do not know anything more, we obviously think of the game published by Ubisoft. Developed by the studio Massive Entertainment to which we owe the series of Tom Clancy’s The Division, we only know that it is a story-centric open world game which is based on the Snowdrop game engine. If no details on the characters, the context, the release date or the platforms have been revealed, it is because development is still in its infancy. In all cases, this adventure will feature “new characters who will have their own motivations and challenges“according to creative director Julian Gerighty, Ubisoft veteran (22 years of experience), who already held this role on Tom Clancy’s The Division.
Once the tour of the formalized projects is done, it is time to discuss some more and more stubborn rumors. According to the very knowledgeable Jason Schreier, a remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, also known as KOTOR, is reportedly in development at Aspyr Media. A rather logical choice of studio since Aspyr is at the origin of the port of several Star Wars games, including those of the first two KOTOR on mobile. Recently, rumors are also circulating around a game from The Mandalorian series that is currently in development according to Nick Baker, insider and founder of the Xbox Era site. Moreover, in a tweet, Jason Schreier seems to go in the direction of this information without confirming it.
An avalanche of series facing a few films
As for films and series, Disney + is broadcasting the first episode of the new animated series today The Bad Batch to celebrate this May 4th. Set between Episodes III and IV, during the early days of the Empire, this is a sequel to the animated series Clone Wars in which we follow the adventures of a squad of genetically modified clones. According to the schedule posted by Disney, the next live-action Star Wars series to air would be The Book of Boba Fett in December 2021. The animated series Visions is also scheduled for this year without having a specific release date. As a reminder, this is an anthology series of 10 animated short films produced by major Japanese animation studios to offer a different perspective on the universe.
As for 2022, only season 3 of The Mandalorian and the first of Andor (series focused on the character of the same name seen in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) have been formalized for now. However, it is highly likely that the miniseries Obi-Wan Kenobi also comes out during this period since filming is due to start soon. While many other series are not yet dated (Ahsoka, Rangers of the New Republic, The Acolyte, Country…), we nevertheless know the release dates of the next three films in the saga.
So, Star Wars : Rogue Squadron directed by Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman) will be shown in theaters on December 22, 2023, while the next two films are scheduled for December 19, 2025 and December 17, 2027. If we know absolutely nothing about these two feature films, it is very likely that it is either the project of Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok), or from Rian Johnson’s trilogy (Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi). Either way, with all of these announcements, the Star Wars franchise still has a bright future ahead of it.
