MOBILIZE debuts in Italy in Bergamo, is managed by a local dealer (Oberti) and is the new electric car-sharing service looking in the direction of the paradigm shift that is embracing mobility. Not just a transition green, where the intensity of that verde it will depend on how much the whole system will be able to generate electricity from truly sustainable sources, but also a detachment from the concept of the car as a means of ownership.
It is a generational change: if before the car was synonymous with freedom because it is linked to the possession of a vehicle capable of moving us, now that freedom wants to redefine itself with a view to de-materialization. Getting around means finding a shared car – less traffic, less occupied parking spaces, less stationary cars when not in use – and using it if necessary with a couple of clicks on the related app.
MOBILIZE is the business unit of the Renault group that wants to build all those services that go beyond the car. Strongly pushed by Luca De Meo, after his passage to the French group, MOBILIZE aims to solve three critical issues.
Eliminate the car stop: 90% of the time the car is unused. Improve residual value: today cars are devalued quickly, sharing them can increase the time of use of the fleet under the watchful eye of manufacturers and service providers who will download from the customer the commitment in terms of maintenance, however significantly reduced for battery-powered vehicles .
Finally, reduce emissions: 15% of CO2 emissions in Europe are related to cars, with electrification aiming to reduce this number.
The way to achieve these three goals is based on four pillars:
- dedicated engineering: vehicles that last a long time and reduce operational costs, optimized for intensive rental use, with more easily washable upholstery. Each Zoe for car sharing has a box and a simplified interface to manage the fleet and give instructions to the car to be enabled via the app.
- 2nd life: the recycling of batteries in the electric fleet
- Software Republique: many hi-tech partners who collaborate with the automotive world to develop the software of the future
- RCI: the financial proposal for institutions, companies and private customers.
Zoe is the first card that MOBILIZE will be played with the Bergamo car sharing, then followed by Dacia Spring, which we tested in preview. A more compact car and delivery vehicle will also arrive between 2022 and 2023.
Car sharing aims to enter as a main player in the future trend of smart cities, integrating into an ecosystem still at the dawn of its development. Bergamo is just the beginning but, soon, 8 additional Renault dealerships will launch the service of electric car sharing in its territories.
HOW SHARING WORKS
I’m 20 the bases of Mobilize car sharing in Bergamo for collection and return of the car which will be sanitized by a partner company. One is the model with which the service will take hold: 52 kWh Renault Zoe with a promised WLTP range of 395 kilometers. Connected with Easy Link, the car will be available in 35 specimens in Bergamo and 10 in the surrounding areas, thus expanding the service outside the city walls.
Car sharing defined as “station based” provides theobligation to return the vehicle to the same station with dedicated seats, therefore suitable for use “round trip“. The bases are in various centers of interest: station, stadium, university and theaters and each has a dedicated employee who monitors the battery charge of each vehicle and, with Framar, sanitization.
The app will be available from June 2021 dedicated to book the car, open and close it (it works as a key) and choose the duration of the service. Being electric, the cars will then have access to free parking spaces, preferential lanes and ZTL access, being able to use them also for medium-long journeys during the day as long as they are brought back to the base.
Zoe, with MOBILIZE, therefore becomes the means to move or leave the city without bearing the fixed costs of a car that, otherwise, would not be used much. It is a response to a specific need, obviously unsuitable for those who use the car continuously.
At the end of use the cars they can be sold as used, both because the devices in terms of equipment make them “rental-proof”, and because maintenance is managed by Renault throughout the life cycle in the sharing phase, including taking care of the battery and its charging.
HOW MUCH DOES MOBILIZE COST WITH ZOE
With the hourly rate of 10 € 50 km are included and the rental runs from a minimum of 30 minutes to a maximum of 10 days. After the first 50 km, take the kilometer rate of 0.20 euros / km. Those who plan longer commissions can take advantage of the daily rate of 50 € which therefore places a maximum limit in case of intense use of the car.
The car can be booked well in advance, even for a few months, and the rental can be extended “on the run” in case of change of plans or unforeseen events, should the need arise.
The only limitation is autonomy: if it is true that you can move anywhere and even outside the city, there is no possibility for the customer to recharge the car, therefore binding its use to those maximum 395 kilometers so as to have the dedicated staff manage the recharge.
