The cyber attack that shut down the Belnet network for several hours yesterday should no longer cause any problems for Tax-on-web.
The time has come again: from today we can enter our tax return for the assessment year 2021 (income from 2020). Many Belgians will probably do this again via the digital platform Tax-on-web, a service of the Federal Public Service Finance. Last year, 1.4 million Belgians entered their tax return digitally via the platform. That was a lot more than the 300,000 who still opted for the old-fashioned paper form. The proportions may be even further apart this year.
Every year there are also many early risers who immediately fulfill their tax obligation on the first day. However, Tax-on-web suffered major disruptions yesterday after the cyber attack on the Belnet network that hit many government websites. But Minister of Finance Vincent Van Peteghem (CD&V) assures you that this should not prevent you from filling in your tax return now. Belnet was able to finally fend off the DDoS attack yesterday evening and performance tests showed that the servers of the platform have been restored sufficiently to cope with the flow of traffic.
Tax-on-web: how does it work?
Do you want to fill in your tax return digitally for the first time this year, but are you not sure Tax-on-web works? Then we will go through the steps for you. You must register with the sister platform with an identity card reader MyMinFin. This can also be done via Itsme if your card reader is not immediately available. Via the menu My declaration you can get the pre-filled tax information. If you are 100 percent sure that these are correct, click on Confirm before Shipping and then again shipment. Do not forget the box before shipping I will keep the necessary supporting documents (included in the explanatory notes) available to tick. Also do not forget that for a joint declaration, both you and your partner must complete their tax form via Tax-on-web.
The final deadline for this year’s returns is set by the government today. For digital declarations, this will probably be around 16 July, just like last year. Good luck!
