After his ban on Facebook and Twitter, Donald Trump promised to come up with his own alternative. That now turns out to be a blog.
Specifically, it concerns an extra part on his website donaldjtrump.com, with the sparkling title ‘From the Desk of Donald J. Trump‘. That is to say: unfiltered and without ministering, as we know it. Immediately catches the eye: the Twitter-like news feed with updates like “The Fraudulent Presidential Election of 2020 will be, from this day forth, known as THE BIG LIE!” With messages like that, he just fell out of favor with social media platforms and defenders of Democratic values.
In early February, it looked like Trump could be partnering with Parler, the right-wing Twitter alternative. It would have been negotiated, but no deal came out. The former president therefore seems to keep it on his own blog for the time being.
Remarkable are the Twitter and Facebook buttons with which fans can in principle just share his updates, although only those for Facebook appear to work for the time being. In principle, users are allowed to share content from Trump’s website, but then it should not violate the Twitter and Facebook user agreement. That will inevitably lead to conflict sooner or later.
Although the platform has only been online for a few days, the status updates go back to March 24. The latest addition is a video promoting his blog as “a place where he can safely say his thoughts, right from Donald J. Trump’s desk”. Fox News knows that in time Trump wants to address his supporters directly. It is not yet clear exactly how that would work. It may be a live stream.
Facebook’s ruling falls today
The timing for the blog’s launch may not be a coincidence. Facebook’s oversight committee is considering Trump’s blocking just today. Later in the day we will be told if he will ever be welcome on Mark Zuckerberg’s platform again. The committee’s ruling would be independent and would last forever. You will soon learn all about it at TechPulse.
