When it rains heavily, rivers and lakes swell strongly. In the worst case, there is a risk of flooding and flooding – that is why the levels of many bodies of water are precisely monitored and documented.
The flood map of the transnational flood portal shows the current situation in Germany on the basis of this data. You will also find a clear list of current warning messages for the individual federal states on the map’s website.

The flood map, which is also available as an app for Windows 10, Android and iOS under the name “My Level”, shows Germany and its rivers. Dots in different colors illustrate the current water level. The scale includes:
No flood (green) Small flood (yellow) Medium flood (orange) Large flood (red) Very large flood (purple)
If you move the mouse over a single federal state, additional information is displayed, including how many gauges are currently flooding.
A click on the state then takes you to a state page where more detailed information can be called up. For example, a click on Lower Saxony opens the website of the Lower Saxony State Office for Water Management. There you will also find the current warning situation report, which is current in this region.

Risk of flooding: make preparations
If there is a real risk of flooding in your region, it is best to make some preparations. First and foremost, it is about physical integrity so that you or your loved ones are not harmed. Always think in solidarity with your fellow human beings such as neighbors or people in need. We have compiled the most important instructions for you in the event of severe weather:
Only in the second step should you also think about property damage. If it is still safe to park your car at a higher point. In any case, you should remove it from the underground car park. Bring valuables upstairs from the basement if it could fill up – but if water is already running into the basement, you should never go downstairs, otherwise it will become a death trap.
