Hyderabad. Actor Rana Daggubati appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday after he was issued summons as part of the ongoing money laundering probe in connection with the bust of a narcotics gang in the city in 2017. ‘Baahubali’ film actor Daggubati is among 10 actors and directors associated with the Telugu film industry who have been summoned by the ED. Renowned filmmaker Puri Jagannath, actresses Charmi Kaur and Rakulpreet Singh, actors Nandu have appeared before the central probe agency since August 31 last year.

The Prohibition and Excise Department of Telangana busted a narcotics gang on July 2, 2017 by arresting three people, including musician Calvin Mascarenhas, on charges of smuggling narcotics like LSD and MDMA. Subsequently, several cases related to drug trafficking were registered and more than 20 people were arrested. According to officials, the gang’s clients included students from schools and colleges in the city, people associated with the Telugu film industry, senior executives of multinational companies and around 1,000 people, including employees of IT companies in Cyberabad.

During the interrogation of those arrested in this connection, the names of some celebrities of the Telugu film industry came to the fore. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Telangana’s Prohibition and Excise Department also probed the alleged drug links with the Telugu film industry and questioned 11 people associated with Tollywood, including actors and directors. An actor’s driver was also questioned and hair and nail samples were also collected. The SIT questioned him to find out whether he had any links with the gang as a consumer or supplier or with those arrested. Chargesheet has been filed in respect of the cases, but chargesheet has not been filed against any of the celebrities of Telugu cinema. The ED has summoned celebrities from Telugu cinema who were also questioned by the SIT and some other agencies. However, Rana was not questioned by the SIT at that time.
