V MechWarrior Online the other day a small scandal erupted. Trans-rights gamers have created two teams called KDCM V: Trans Rights and KDCM VI: Trans Fights. However, the developers soon renamed them.
According to the published correspondence with the support team, other players complained about these teams. The trans defenders wrote different slogans in the chat at the beginning of each match, like “Give rights to trans.” The developers stated that their title is not a place for “political discussions”.
However, the teams did not calm down and made a fuss, do not reddit. For a while, the developers stood their ground. Even the co-founder of Piranha Games, Russ Bullock, got involved – he said that the studio had renamed the teams in order to “protect them from the trolls.” However, this did not help.
As a result, the developers backtracked, returned the teams to their names and apologized for this incident:
Our actions have obviously hurt and offended people, and I apologize. We will try to be better. With the understanding that transgender rights are not a political issue, we will allow the team to use any of their original options as their team name. In addition, we will undo any moderation actions taken in connection with this incident.
Matt Newman, Community Manager, Piranha Games
Members of the renamed teams approved of this decision, but noted that the developers are putting in too little effort to combat toxic behavior.
MechWarrior Online was released in 2013 on PC.
