Google has released Android 12, a new mobile operating system with a redesigned design, faster performance and enhanced security. The twelfth version of the popular mobile OS is available in the form of universal ready-made assemblies for x86-64 and ARM64 devices, and in the coming weeks, owners of Google Pixel smartphones will receive it as an update. Selected mobile devices from Xiaomi, Samsung, OnePlus, Oppo, Realme and Tecno will also receive corresponding updates. The source code of the system is hosted on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP).
Android 12 has received many important software improvements over its predecessors. Google has improved the appearance of the OS interface in the style of Material You. Also, the new edition of the mobile system was named in honor of the dessert – this tradition was renewed by a two-year break. Dave Burke, Google VP of Android Development, confirmed on Twitterthat Android 12 was named Snow Cone. We are talking about a snow cone – a dessert of their crushed fruit ice with syrup.
Initially released on May 18, Android 12 has a new Material You branding that allows you to adapt the look of the screen and applications to the needs of the user. The developers themselves believe that the OS has received the largest design update in recent years. Widgets have become more visible and clear, they will be able to adapt their colors to the installed design system.
The system has received a new set of zoom and pan effects, and the drop-down area has been completely redesigned. Using the quick settings menu, the user will be able to manage Google Pay payments, switch between Internet sources and even control a smart home. Another nice thing: notifications from applications will now take over the settings of the installed theme.
The new version of Android received a unified Privacy Dashboard interface for managing application access rights. It also allows you to track which programs (as well as when and for what reasons) accessed the microphone with the camera and which geolocation data was requested. If the application starts working with a camera or microphone, the corresponding indicators will appear on the top panel. The user will be able to find out the name of the application and restrict his access to the equipment.
Another interesting feature of Android 12 is the ability to “trick” applications, providing them with only approximate geolocation data instead of accurate. If the application tries to read data from the clipboard copied in another program, the OS will also notify about this.

the integrated play-as-you-download function – the ability to play games even before they are fully downloaded to the device; API Game Mode – a special mode with which the player can set the maximum performance of the device at the expense of the charge, or vice versa; the main system services began to load the processor by 22% less – this will provide an increase in the operating time of the device by 15%; notifications have become more responsive – when you tap on the required notification, the application opens instantly; accelerated switching between applications – the mechanism of interprocessor communication began to work faster at times; improved handling of dex, odex and vdex files – this will allow applications to start even faster; the animation of screen rotation has been optimized – the delay before this operation has been reduced by 25%; the system received a new search engine AppSearch – with full-text indexing and a function for sorting search results; switchable hibernation mode for long-unused applications, which allows you to reset the granted access rights, frees up the system resources and blocks all processes.
