Tencent continues to expand its boundaries within the gaming industry by acquiring the studio responsible for the Yooka-Laylee series, Playtonic. The Chinese holding has invested to secure a minority stake in the British software house and financially support its next videogame projects.
Tencent’s investment will result in a greater amount of resources for Playtonic, which will thus be able to “more than double” the number of its collaborators.
“We have always had a dialogue with Tencent”says managing director Gavin Price. “We talked to them about the future of 3D platformers and what we will do next. I revealed to them that we had that in Playtonic growth plan to accommodate more people in many teams.
They liked the study and what we published earlier, and thought they could help us achieve these goals. And from there it continued. We all wanted the deal, so we just handed the papers to the lawyers and waited for them to tell me it was all done “.
Playtonic, therefore, will have three development teams and will give birth to ambitious new titles, among which there is also a direct sequel to Yooka-Laylee (Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Liar is considered a spin-off of the platform series).
