A few hours ago, NASA, together with SpaceX, launched a Falcon 9 rocket with a DART satellite into space. Its task is to “crash” into the binary asteroid Didyme and try to change its trajectory. If everything goes according to plan, then the agency will have a working way by which it will be possible to avoid collisions of our planet with dangerous space objects.
The mission itself reminded many of the plot of the 1998 Armageddon disaster, in which a team of drillers led by Bruce Willis rescued the Earth from a giant asteroid. NASA even thought it would be a good idea to invite an actor to the launch pad:
We didn’t want to miss this connection.
Bill Nelson, NASA Administrator
Unfortunately Bruce Willis was unable to make it, so the launch went off without him. Apparently, the actor was very busy – he was filming another masterpiece.
