Apple has notified Polish prosecutor Eva Wrzosek that her iPhone has been jailbroken using Pegasus spyware and is likely under surveillance. Eve herself told about this on Twitter.
ThinkApple reports that the attorney received a notice from Apple about a possible government attack on its iPhone using Pegasus software. In her tweet, she asked the Minister of Justice for an explanation. This allowed us to take a first look at most of the text that Apple uses for tampering warnings:
Attention! Government sponsored attackers can attack your iPhone. Apple believes you have been targeted by government-sponsored attackers who are trying to remotely hack the iPhone associated with your Apple ID. Attackers are likely targeting you because of who you are and what you do. If your device is compromised, a government-sponsored attacker can remotely access your sensitive data, messages, or even your camera and microphone. This may be a false alarm, but we ask you to take this warning seriously.
Government-sponsored attackers are very well funded and sophisticated, and their attacks evolve over time. Researchers and journalists have publicly documented such attacks on popular cloud services including iMessage, as well as Facebook Messenger, Gmail, Signal, and WhatsApp.
Some government-sponsored attacks do not require your intervention, while others rely on being tricked into opening a malicious link or downloading an attachment in an email, SMS, or other message. These attempts can be quite compelling, ranging from fake package tracking updates to specially crafted emotional appeals that claim one of your family members is in danger. Be careful with any links you receive and do not open links or attachments from unexpected or unknown senders.
This is just a part of the message that Vrzosek shared. It is believed that they began to follow her after her investigation into the holding of the presidential elections.
Earlier this week, Apple sued the NSO for hacking iOS users and spying on iPhone owners with Pegasus spyware. In addition, the company has begun to notify users it is tracking.
