Apple is stepping up pressure on suppliers over iPhone and iPad shortages as Chinese partners were forced to suspend production of gadgets for several days in October for the first time in a decade.
Nikkei Asia describes Apple’s shipping situation as “the nightmare before Christmas.” Analysts estimate that the company missed production targets for the iPhone 13 in September and October by about 20%. In addition, Apple has been forced to slash its overall iPhone 13 production target to 83 million to 85 million units, up from its original target of 95 million smartphones.
This is partly to blame for China’s new laws and component shortages. For the first time in a decade, iPhone and iPad assembly was halted for several days due to electricity restrictions in China in October.
In addition, shortages affecting iPhone, iPad and Mac manufacturing are related to peripheral components, including power management ICs from Texas Instruments and transceivers from Nexperia, as well as connectivity ICs from Broadcom.
Apple is now pressuring its partners to speed up iPhone production in December and January.
