Major European telecom operators are demanding from local authorities a ban on the use of the iCloud Private Node function in the EU countries, reports The Telegraph. Apple’s service could undermine the EU’s digital sovereignty.
ICloud Private Relay is an iOS 15 feature that encrypts data, preventing Apple or third parties from seeing user activity in Safari. When enabled, the user’s Internet requests are sent through two separate repeaters, with the first being controlled by Apple itself and the second by a third-party company. More information on how iCloud Private Node works can be found on the company’s website.
In August 2021, two months after the announcement of a new iCloud feature, Vodafone, Telefonica, Orange and T-Mobile sent a round-robin letter to the European Commission expressing concerns about the service. According to The Telegraph, the European Commission did not respond to a letter from EU mobile operators.
It is worth noting that iCloud Private Node is currently in beta on devices running iOS 15, iPadOS 15 and macOS Monterey, and it is unclear how Apple will respond to the demand from operators in various countries.
