The release of Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart in 2021 helped solidify the series as one of PlayStation’s most valuable and iconic games. One fan used the game’s Photo Mode to recreate the box art of the original game with a great level of precision.
User Twitter CloudStrian shared a recreation of Ratchet and Clank’s original box art using the Rift Apart Photo Mode. There’s a lot to see here as the CloudStrian rendering is full of detail wherever you look. The author absolutely accurately reproduced the pose of the original art, when Ratchet confidently stands with a massive weapon, and Clank looks over Ratchet’s shoulder, strapped to his back. What might be the most graceful moment is the changed background of the original, replacing all names and profiles of all weapons in the game with weapons from Rift Apart.
CloudStrian offers fans a great opportunity to watch the franchise change direction. Ratchet and Clank for PS2 is pretty tough and artistically industrial (i.e. more realistic weapon designs), complete with Ratchet’s excited smile and Clank’s determined expression.
Conversely, in addition to technical capabilities, modern Ratchet and Clank are much cleaner and possibly more quirky, Ratchet himself looks much more friendly, and Warmonger’s weapons are more fun and futuristic. Insomniac Games herself shared the work of CloudStrian on Twitter, saying, “Awesome work!”
Since the developers of Insomniac Games are currently busy with Spider-Man 2 and Wolverine, it is unknown when Ratchet and Clank will next appear on PS5. There are rumors of Project Spartacus, an upcoming service that will allow gamers to return to the games of the PS1, PS2 and PS3 eras, perhaps the next appearance of Ratchet and Clank will be in older incarnations. Currently, the only way to play the original Ratchet and Clank is to get a copy of the game on PS2 or find a copy of the remastered Ratchet and Clank Collection for PS3, however fans think these ports are not the best way to play these games.
