According to a report from Bloomberg, Sony is said to have decided to continue production of the PlayStation 4 until the end of 2022. A step with which the company would like to respond to the ongoing supply bottlenecks for the PlayStation 5.

Due to the global shortage of semiconductors and the corresponding chips, the not so new consoles PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X / S continue to struggle with delivery bottlenecks.
If it is up to selected experts, an easing of the situation could be expected in 2023 at the earliest. As reported by Bloomberg, Sony and Sony Interactive Entertainment are said to have decided to respond to the PlayStation 5 delivery bottlenecks with an extension of the PlayStation 4 production. A step that is apparently intended to give interested customers a low-cost entry into the PlayStation ecosystem with the PlayStation 4 – with the option of switching to the PlayStation 5 in due course.
Should PS4 production end as early as 2021?
As people familiar with the circumstances reportedly confirmed to Bloomberg, Sony and Sony Interactive Entertainment advised assembly partners late last year that production of the PlayStation 4 would continue until the end of 2022. Originally, the production of the console, which was released in 2013, was to be discontinued at the end of 2021, according to Bloomberg’s sources.

To what extent this information corresponds to the facts remains to be seen. So far, Sony and Sony Interactive Entertainment have not spoken openly about when production of the PlayStation 4 should ultimately be discontinued.
This is also the reason why Bloomberg’s sources do not want to be named by name, the business magazine concluded.
