Authoritative insider and Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman said that the release of Apple’s first mixed reality headset may be delayed until 2023 due to problems identified during the development of the gadget.
Gurman, citing people familiar with Apple’s plans, claims that the company originally planned to announce the headset in 2021 and release it this year. Then the iPhone manufacturer wanted to hold a presentation at WWDC in June 2022, but now this option is unlikely due to a number of development problems.
According to sources, the headset is overheating. In addition, testers are seeing problems with the camera and software.
Interestingly, in early prototypes, Apple tried to solve overheating problems by connecting to the iPhone to perform all computing operations. The company then decided to use chips similar in performance to the M1 to make the headset a completely standalone device. About 2,000 Apple engineers are currently working on the gadget.
Apple is now considering delaying the headset launch until late 2022 or 2023. Gurman claims that the company allegedly informed partners in the supply chain that the device is unlikely to come out before 2023. At the same time, Apple hopes that LG Innotek will start mass production of headset cameras in the second quarter of this year.
