On January 14, The Matrix Resurrection movie was released in China. The opening weekend gross was $7.5 million, the best ever outside of the US. However, analysts believe the film’s overall box office in China will be low.
The new Matrix is expected to gross just over $15 million in China all-time. There are two main reasons:
- After the release on HBO Max in December 2021, The Matrix was actively distributed through pirated Chinese resources.
- The Chinese audience did not like the film very much: its ratings are worse than those of all other films in the franchise.
The Matrix Resurrection has grossed $140 million worldwide. This, notes The Hollywood Reporter, is significantly less than the film’s budget.
The Matrix is believed to have cost at least $190 million to film. There is no information about how much the advertising campaign cost. Obviously, the film distribution will not even cover the production budget of the film.
