Over the years, Willem Dafoe’s name has often been associated with the Goblin from the Spider-Man trilogy, whose role he would later reprise in Spider-Man: No Way Home, but fans have speculated about other possible roles in the DC Comics world, and one of them was the role of the Joker.
A Joker sequel starring Joaquin Phoenix has been the subject of discussion for some time now, and in recent months both director and actor have agreed on one thing: if the story is true to the first part of the film and further reveals the character, then both Phoenix and Todd Phillips will be back filming a possible Joker 2 in no time.
In a recent interview with GQ magazine, Willem Dafoe offered his thoughts on the Joker sequel, suggesting that he would share a scene with Phoenix in the film:
There’s something very interesting about bringing the idea of the impostor Joker to life. Thus, it would be possible to have not only a confrontation between two Jokers, but also a character who pretends to be one, who says that he is the Joker, but at the same time he is not. This opens up the possibility for an interesting story, especially if you have Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker and there’s someone who copies everything he’s already done. I imagined something similar. Other than that, I haven’t contacted anyone to talk about it, you guys are the first ones.
Phoenix himself has said he’s open to a Joker sequel if there’s an opportunity to further explore the character of Arthur:
You know he’s an interesting guy. There are some things we could do with this guy and we could explore some other things. But as for the question of whether we will ever actually do it? I do not know.
