Valve has announced a new SteamWorks update, with which Gabe Newell’s company has introduced a feature in anticipation of the upcoming market debut of Steam Deck, the first portable gaming platform from the authors of Half-Life and Counter Strike.
Thanks to dynamic synchronization of the Cloud, Steam Deck owners will be perfectly able to pause their games and resume them from where they left off via another platform, be it a PC, laptop or another Steam Deck.
“As part of our commitment to support Steam Deck, we have added a new Dynamic Cloud Sync feature to the Steam Cloud. This feature allows players to play their games seamlessly on Deck and PC, without having to worry about exiting the game on the Steam Deck.
We expect users to frequently interrupt their Steam Deck gaming sessions without exiting the game, as is often the case with other portable gaming devices. Thanks to the dynamic synchronization of the Cloud, the progress made will be found by players who choose to play on another device, be it a PC or another Steam Deck “.
The functionality is free but not automatic: Developers will need to manually enable it for their games through Steamworks, taking advantage of some new APIs (developers can find details on how to implement the feature on Steam).
In case the Deck owner disables dynamic synchronization, once the console is put on standby while a game is running and then attempting to resume it on a different device, they will be prompted to return to Deck to close the running process or to continue. without the most recent game progress saved.
Valve has confirmed that Steam Deck supports Easy Anticheat, so as to make several titles that make use of the technology compatible with the portable platform.
