The highly anticipated Pokémon Legends: Arceus it is now a stone’s throw away. While PokéFans from all over the globe are already preparing to leave to discover the ancient Region of Hisui (for more details we invite you to consult the preview of Pokémon Legends: Arceus), Tencent Games has released a new trailer of Roco Kingdom Mobile, an interesting RPG halfway between Pokémon and Genshin Impact. According to what was confirmed by the publisher, the product will debut in China on iOS and Android in the course of 2022, and although at the moment it has not yet revealed its intention to bring it to the rest of the globe, its very first gameplay videos have already captured. the attention of lovers of the genre. Having collected all the information available online, we therefore offer you our preliminary impressions of Roco Kingdom Mobile below.
The rebirth of the Kingdom of Roco
Before analyzing the assets of Roco Kingdom Mobile it is necessary to take a step back and go back to 2010, the year in which Tencent Games released an MMORPG called Roco Kingdom. Almost unknown in the West, the title was set in the homonymous Kingdom of Roco, whose inhabitants lived in symbiosis with their funny pets: creatures not very different from Pocket Monsters that made the Game Freak franchise famous.
Not surprisingly, in that fairy-tale kingdom ruled by magic, players could make their creatures fight, each of which could count on a wide range of elemental attacks or attacks related to their physical characteristics. Thanks to the obvious similarities to Pokémon and the constant updates received over time, it shouldn’t come as a surprise at all at least at home the product became extremely popular, inspiring, among other things, a webtoon, four animated feature films, an animated series destined for the television circuit and even a live-action. More than a decade after the original debut of the MMORPG, not only is Tencent infusing new life into the franchise, but it seems that the Chinese giant has invested a lot of resources in its latest project. First of all it should be noted that Roco Kingdom Mobile will boast its own bow of arrows a vast and open-world world, similar to what was done by a blockbuster such as Genshin Impact (here you can find our review of Genshin Impact).
Characterized by a splendid cel-shading that we are sure will satisfy the palates of fans of anime and oriental video games, the fascinating Kingdom of Roco will offer players all kinds of settings, in fact during the videos so far released on the net we have already been able to admire dense forests vegetation, suggestive snow-capped mountains, endless grasslands that can be crossed on the backs of monsters, mysterious ruins suspended in midair and even a lively town.
Of course, it has already been specified that each biome will be inhabited by different beings and that the presence of the day / night cycle will impact the fauna, encouraging users to sift through every single ravine of land at different times of the day.
Given its mobile nature, on a purely graphic level the product may not stand up to the comparison with the flashy DokeV under development at the Pear Abyss studios (in this regard we advise you to retrieve our preview of DokeV), nevertheless it is impossible deny that Tencent Games’ new proposal is characterized by a colorful and delightful look capable of making most of the titles related to the Pokémon world pale. Our only real concern at the moment revolves around the design of the monsters, in our opinion anything but original.
Observing the gameplay videos, in fact, we noticed several similarities between the funny beings that populate the world of Roco Kingdom Mobile and the Pokémon, not to mention the Digimon themselves or the bizarre pets of Ni no Kuni (jump on the review of Ni no Kuni Remastered ). In this regard, we therefore hope that the new Tencent mobile game can unleash a variegated and imaginative bestiary as much as those by which it is clearly inspired.
On a playful level we still know little about Roco Kingdom Mobile, except that during the exploratory sessions we will be able to take advantage of the characteristics and elements of the creatures captured. For example, if pets with the power of flames come in handy when lighting a fire, cooking the ingredients collected along the journey and camping for the night, the birds will help us get off comfortably from high places and avoid the need to travel each time backwards the road followed during the climb, while the runners – such as wolves or medium-sized cats – can be ridden, speeding up the crossing of very large areas considerably.
Not even the combat system should differ much from that of Pokémon, so much so that at the beginning of a challenge the two contenders they will throw balls very similar to Pokéballs and from which their respective companions in adventures will emerge. Once on the field, they will then be able to perform in destructive attacks, which according to what we have seen so far will be characterized by animations and special effects of excellent workmanship. Hoping that the publisher will decide as soon as possible to explain to us in detail the operation of the combat system and to announce the western version, Roco Kingdom Mobile seems to have the latent potential for become one of the hottest mobile titles of the year just started, as well as one of the most combative opponents ever faced by the numerous Pokémon-like already in circulation.
