Elden Ring modders have found compelling evidence that one of the biggest threats in the game is the rotting hound, which can instantly kill anyone, especially you.
As Dark Souls dataminer Zullie The Witch explained in a recent video (referencing and sharing insights from modder Meowmaritus, who created the animation tool used for these analyses), the rotting dogs found in the later stages of Elden Ring have a unique bug that grants them incredible damage. .
To summarize Zullie’s findings, every enemy in Elden Ring has an ID file and an assigned animation behavior file. The small and large dog variants share an animation file, so whenever either of them attacks, the game checks the data for both the small and large dogs at the same time.
If the big dog attacks, it correctly registers one hit from that attack. But when the little dogs use one specific lunge attack, the system breaks down and ends up doing a check for every frame they are in the enemy’s hitbox, causing them to hit you a million times, or at least once every frame.
This allows tiny threats to deal 11,640 damage at a time to anything in range, according to Zullie’s calculations. With such indicators, these dogs can theoretically destroy any boss in the game in a matter of seconds.
And do not forget that when fighting these dogs, the player suffers from the bleeding effect, which also deals damage. And the calculation above doesn’t even take into account the bonus bleed damage as it depends on your max HP.
Zullie speculated that the problem could be related to FPS and said the higher frame rates achieved on PC and next-gen consoles could really amplify the damage these creepy dogs deal. He also noted that he was not aware of any other enemy with such a problem.
The good news, according to Zullie’s video, is that Meowmaritus has tested a modified version of the Killer Dog Behavior file and found that it correctly registers small dog attacks, fixing the incredible damage bug.
Now we need to wait for FromSoftware fixes, and players should avoid encounters with these terrible creatures in the Interearth for now.
