Elden Ring has sold 12 million copies in less than a month, far exceeding what were the forecasts of the publisher Bandai Namco Entertainment. The open world of FromSofware has bewitched critics and audiences, yet there are those who are convinced that the success of the work directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki is due to other factors.
The New York Times published a new article in which it dealt with Elden Ring and the alleged relationship that would exist between the media and commercial success of the action-RPG with the Coronavirus pandemic. According to the US newspaper, there are several entertainment works that have tried in recent months to capture the sense of difficulty that humanity has faced with the health emergency, but no one has done it better than Elden Ring.
If Animal Crossing had resonated with many people during the lockdown for its comfortable and homely experience, Elden Ring was welcomed with open arms by players for its open world structure and the almost unlimited freedom of action granted to Senzaluce. Going into the areas of the Interregnum, however, he finds himself any kind of danger to threaten our safety.
“It’s hard to imagine Elden Ring getting this kind of cultural resonance in any other era. In year 3 of the pandemic, as vaccination rates increased and hospitalization cases decreased in some areas, offices, schools and restaurants were reopened. For many Americans, the dragon was slain.
Yet in other parts of the world, a new variant of the coronavirus is driving another wave and in New York cases are starting to rise again. While some of us let our guard down to have a semblance of normal life, we’re bracing ourselves for that stupid bird around the corner that could still kill us. Ours lasts lesson of the pandemic – expect disappointments and more and more struggles – trained us well for Elden Ring“.
On Twitter it was pointed out that the NYT has adjusted the game by replacing “success” with “cultural cachet”, since the reaction of users has not been the most optimistic for the moment. And what do you think of this opinion on Elden Ring?
