Chinese company NetEase Games has opened a new studio in North America called Jackalope Games. Based in Austin, Texas, it is the tech giant’s first fully funded in-house studio based in the United States.
Jackalope Games, which will specialize in PC and mobile game development, will be led by industry veteran Jack Emmert, who previously served as CEO of Cryptic Studios and head of game development at Daybreak Game Company. Emmert’s track record includes many MMO games, including Neverwinter, Star Trek Online, DC Universe Online, and City of Heroes.
NetEase Games is the best place for me and my team. We share the same passion – to create exciting online universes for gamers around the world. NetEase Games provides the support and resources you need to make great games.
– Jack Emmert
Jackalope Games will operate as an independent studio under NetEase, focusing on independent projects. NetEase is currently partnered with Blizzard Entertainment and responsible for the marketing and distribution of games like Overwatch and StarCraft II in China, but with Jackalope Games, the Chinese giant is taking a full step into the Western market.
