The creator of the iPod, Tony Fadell, told in an interview with Joanna Stern of the WSJ an interesting fact that Steve Jobs was initially against the physical SIM card slot in the iPhone.
During an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Fadell said that Jobs suggested using Verizon’s CDMA technology in the original iPhone instead of the usual GSM. This move would make the device “seamless” – without a slot for a physical SIM card.
Fortunately, Fadell managed to convince Jobs by showing market data that CDMA prevalence was too low.
In fact, the Apple founder achieved his goal in January 2011 when the company released a CDMA version of the iPhone 4 for the Verizon network without a physical SIM slot.
Apple is rumored to release an iPhone without a physical SIM slot in the next few years.
