Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition allowed fans to relive one of the brightest JRPGs from the first PlayStationat the time, among other things, never officially arrived in Europe having only enjoyed a debut on Japanese and American soil.
Not everything went the right way, given the numerous perplexities raised by critics and the public regarding the technical stability of this re-edition: for example, Digital Foundry has crushed the remastered of Chrono Cross, reporting on PS5 even lower performance than the original 1999 edition. Nevertheless, its return gave hope for a possible unreleased episode for the Chrono series, which began in 1995 with the never forgotten Chrono Trigger.
However, regarding the arrival of a third chapter, the producer Koichiro Sakamoto hinted at his pessimism in an interview posted on the official Square Enix website. “There are no plans at the moment“for a sequel, Sakamoto says, adding that”I don’t know in any case what the future holds“The continuation of the Chrono series is therefore completely unsure and, at the very least, it won’t happen in the short term.
Also in the same interview Sakamoto talked about what were the major difficulties found in the development of the remastered, explaining that “the game program and graphic data were not kept in complete form. This means that, at the beginning of development, we could not recreate the original version on hardware other than the first PlayStation“. The development team finally understood which parts were lost and recreated them from scratch for the remastered. In addition, the aim has always been to faithfully reproduce the original work, therefore ideas such as adding more playable characters was never considered.
