Journalists Bloomberg stated that the corporation Apple engaged in prototype testing iPhone with USB-C instead of a proprietary connector Lightning. However, you should not expect such changes in the next generation of smartphones.

Opting out of Lightning is related to the requirements European regulator, who decided to introduce a single connector for all modern smartphones. This will allow cut production chargers and other accessories compatible with other connectors, as well as reduce amount of waste. In addition, USB-C is used in new generations iPad and mac, while the iPhone still needs to have a separate charging wire.

According to the source, such models will go on sale no earlier than 2023. To continue using wired headphones and other Lightning-only accessories, Apple will release special adapter.
