The remake of Prince of Persia The Sands of Time, announced back in the fall of 2020, is not doing very well: the game recently changed the main development studio. Previously, the Indian divisions of Ubisoft were engaged in the project, now the remake was transferred to Ubisoft Montreal.
After changing the head studio for the remake, Indian games industry specialist Rishi Alvani published a story about the problems that arose during the development of Prince of Persia The Sands of Time.
- The developers were given a minimum of documentation. The remake designers had to recreate The Sands of Time, purely visually focusing on the original project.
- The remake is created on the Assassin’s Creed Origins engine, reusing animation rigs: in particular, the Prince got the Bayek rig. Allegedly because of this, the movements of the Prince look strange.
- The head of development for The Sands of Time remake has never led a game development team before.
- Before the announcement, Ubisoft didn’t follow the development of the remake at all. After the presentation of the game, which caused dissatisfaction with fans, the company outsourced the project to Electric Square, but its employees also did not succeed.
According to Alvani, following the announcement of the Prince of Persia The Sands of Time remake and the ensuing outrage from fans, Ubisoft reassessed the state of the project. As a result, the head of Ubisoft India, Jean-Philippe Piechot, was transferred to lead the Ukrainian divisions of the company.
After the transfer of the project to Ubisoft Montreal, Ubisoft’s Indian studios allegedly reverted to support studio status. Some of the staff, Alvani says, have left the studios, there is a possibility that the Mumbai office will be closed.
