Apparently in the world of Mario there is not enough diversityat least according to the tool to measure it announced by Activision Blizzard in a sea of controversy. But let’s go in order because everything comes from afar, that is from the GDC 2017.
After the announcement of the new tool, some went to exhume a video of the 2017 Game Developer Conference where it was shown how it works, which has therefore been tested for at least six years and not only recently, as stated by Activision, applied to the Mario series.
According to the results, the world of the Italian plumber would be particularly lacking in the representation of disability and in the diversification of sexual orientations. According to the tool, in fact, there are no disabled characters and those present are all heterosexuals.
Now, arguing about the sexual orientation of Super Mario characters is already strange on its own (how do Goombas mate? Yoshi likes to participate or does he just watch?), But Activision’s tool also gives us other pearls, such as the ‘appreciation for the fact that Mario and Luigi are Italian, which would make them less compliant with the reference model for measurement, as well as that for the age of the characters, apparently very varied, and for Mario’s physique, which is short and rounded.
