When Saints Row was announced in September 2019, many were surprised that the franchise was getting a reboot. Volition’s creative director Brian Trafficante shed some light on why they decided to reboot the franchise and the issues that come with it.
We really liked the story that we told in the previous games. We closed this chapter and did what we wanted. Approaching the new Saints Row game with all the things previous games have done and what it meant to people was really a challenge. The goal is to make sure it’s more than just a spiritual successor, to make sure it’s a time-tested Saints Row game. Everything you’ve learned and loved about Saints Row will be in the reboot.
Trafficante went on to talk about how the reboot would retain the same DNA as previous games, later stating that the game was between Saints Row 2 and 3 in how it balanced its humor and seriousness.
