Images of “Monopoly”, dedicated to the fourth season of the Netflix series Stranger Things, have leaked to the network. As it turned out, the visual of the board game cards reveals the main plot points of the new episodes.
Netflix is dissatisfied with such a failure – however, not as much as the creators of the show, the Duffer brothers, with whom no one even consulted about the game. Matt and Ross Duffer value secrecy and, according to sources, consider the marketing blunder to be a “total failure.”
A thread on the Reddit forum regarding the leak claimed that the game was purchased “from a recognized retailer and purchased by the buyer in good faith. No one stole it and no images leaked. However, these purchase details have not been confirmed. Retailers are currently promoting several Stranger Things boards for Monopoly tied to past seasons, though a couple of alleged copies of the season four version are advertised on eBay.
A source close to the show said that while its producers are heavily involved in approving most of the promotions, Stranger Things’ franchising is not comparable to any other Netflix show. The Monopoly incident probably happened by pure chance.
Lessons learned, I think with the fifth season there will be more composure, the source said.
The fourth season of Stranger Things is set to premiere on Netflix on May 27.
