In the meanwhile fourth part of the Super Mario Advanceseries, plumber Mario and brother Luigi have to work together – after all, the cute princess has once again been kidnapped by the nasty Koopa gang.
A total of eight expansive sections have to be explored either alternately with the two superheroes or with Mario alone. On each upper world map you will find numerous level entrances, bonus fields and a lock that leads to a fight with the Obermotz. However, you are not allowed to move completely freely across the landscapes, which are sometimes several screens in size: Only when you successfully complete a sub-level does the passage to further sections open.
The respective jump’n’run levels provide variety with different themed areas such as desert, underwater area and spooky castle. Standards such as rotating platforms and collapsing bridges are paired with innovative power-ups for the heroes. For example, you slip into a raccoon costume in order to keep opponents away via a tail attack or to hover for a short time and mutate into a super plumber who throws fireballs via a flower extra. Extras won in mini-games can be activated before the levels as a welcome help.
